Joss’ first job as a young was as a writer for Roseanne in 1989. He then became the writer and co-producer of a show called Parenthood that only lasted one season.
But then he sold a script for a cross-genre comedy/horror movie that the studios thought had real potential. The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
It didn't do well.
Next, he was one of 7 writers on Toy Story.
Then, he got his original vision of Buffy on the small screen, which was a big hit. It lasted 7 seasons.
Other films he worked on included Alien Resurrection, Lion King 2, Titan AE, Atlantis, the Lost Empire, and more.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer did so well, it created a spinoff called Angel, which was pretty successful.
Then, he launched Firefly, which was widely loved but only lasted 14 episodes.
But it was popular enough that he made a feature film off of it called Serenity, which was also very loved but made far less than the cost to make it, so it was kind-of a bomb.
He struggled for three years before launching the web series Dr. Horribles Sing-Along Blog, which brought him back into the limelight.
The TV show The Dollhouse followed, which only lasted 2 seasons.
Then Marvel came calling.
Joss worked as a writer and story consultant on Thor and Captain America before being named both writer and director of the big dog - the tentpole to end all tentpoles - The Avengers in 2012.
And in case you’re keeping count, yes, The Avengers was Joss Whedon’s SECOND movie!
The Avengers went on to be one of the most successful movies of ever and Joss Whedon became one of the most sought-after people in Hollywood. The stink of failure is totally gone.
Over the next couple of years, he helps Marvel launch their first TV series, Agents of Shield, which is currently one of ABC’s biggest hits.
And, of course, he followed all that up with his 4th movie to direct, Avengers, Age of Ultron. Which did okay.
So what are some takeaways here.
One, we all start small.
Second, he believed in his vision.
Third, you can always get knocked back down.
But Fourth, when you do wind up on your ass, sometimes it takes something really crazy to get back up.
And five, know your bread and butter.
