Here I take a question by Mark Lott, asking why, with all the billions of stars out there, we haven't been able to detect a single intelligent civilization out there. This is the Fermi Paradox.

The universe is impossibly big. Even our own galactic backyard has 10,000 stars for every grain of sand on Earth. Shouldn't it be teeming with intelligent life? If this sounds bizarre, the reasons science has come up with to explain this are freaking bananas.
Pass this around! Blow some minds!
